You’ll still get there, just more slowly

A hiking experiment

Sponsored by

I hate hiking.

And my friend Scott is making me do it. I’m supporting his goal to finish a race in Cerro Gordo. A friend of his bought an old mining town and is turning it into a tourist destination.

Which, not going to lie is a pretty cool project.

The guy that owns the town started an annually hike/run up there, which is a pretty brilliant marketing move in my opinion.

But now I have to hike… early in the morning each and every Saturday and Sunday.

The hiking bit isn’t so bad, even though the shitty jagged rocks sticking up in the ground almost end my pickleball career each weekend. It’s really the getting up early that I hate the most.

The other week on one of the miserable hikes the boys got way ahead of me. Which was fine, I really don’t mind being left behind, I’m in no rush, they are trying to beat times though.

I started thinking about my life and how I’m just disappointed in where I’m at. And that line of thinking got me wanting to do a small experiment. I wanted to see what would happen if every 10 steps forward I took, I then had to take 5 steps back.

I saw it as a kind of metaphor for what has constantly happened in my life when creating businesses. I start a business, work on it for a few years, then realize it’s not really working, and try a different business out.

It’s something I very much hate that I do. But here we are….

So while doing this 10 forward 5 back.

I realized 3 things:

  1. It was really annoying and slow… I know, Duh.

  2. But also, I would arrive at the bottom where they were eventually. It would take me a great deal longer to get there, but eventually I would.

  3. Just moving forward, without the back steps even slowly, gets you there faster.

So how does this translate to life?

  1. Even if you’re fucking up, as long as you’re fucking up in the same direction, you’ll still get to where you’re trying to get to.

  2. By not changing direction, you can get there faster, not as fast as if you ran, but still faster.

I’ve been so concerned with not feeling like I am moving fast enough, or not getting there (really it’s more about not knowing when I’ll get there), that I quit and try something else when just staying on track with what I’m doing is all I need to keep doing.

Obviously other factors come into play, but really instead of thinking I need to work hard, faster, longer, like a lot of the gurus say. I just need to stop worrying about if I need to be working hard, faster, longer, and just be okay with getting there eventually, at a pace that’s right for me.

So even thought steps backwards suck, as long as you’re going the right direction, you’ll still arrive at your intended destination.

So what is your destination?
