Could Prison be the best thing to ever happen to you?
Sometimes the worst can become the best
Gang’s putting out hits on one another.
Anal rape.
Terrible food.
No control over you schedule.
All things that the media and authority figures scare you with to keep you in line and (hopefully) out of prison.
But what if prison wasn’t as bad as you’ve been told it is?
Or it is as bad as they tell you, but all it takes is a small reframe to view it as the most pivotal and important experience of your life that launches you into greatness?
That’s exactly what Bernard Hopkins was able to do.
I was recently listening to him on the Joe Rogan Experience and I found it so compelling how someone could have such a positive outlook on something I fear quite deeply.
He could have let prison define him as criminal, instead, he used the lessons he learned surviving a terrible situation to aid him in a successful boxing career, and then in business as a top tier boxing promoter.
Hearing him talk about how he not only didn’t dislike prison, he surprisingly kind of enjoyed it.
All his friends were there, so for him, it was similar to a shitty summer camp. There’s also an extra strong bond that’s formed between friends that survive a challenging time together.
However, most importantly, he regained his love for boxing while trapped in between concrete walls and steel. Only because they had a boxing program that allowed him to rediscover his love for boxing. This lead him to choose going after a boxing career instead of dealing cocaine like all his friends. Something he mentioned was basically is only other option.
How wild is that, had he not gone to prison he would have likely become a powerful drug-dealer kingpin instead of a good hearted boxer that has had a significant impact on the sport.
I bet that’s what he is in another spiderverse.
So, what from your past, that you currently have framed as negative, can you reframe as positive? Within that event, whatever it is, what has given you an important skills or taught you an important lesson that has allowed you to achieve what you’ve achieved in life so far?
