Playing your own piano

What Westworld’s can teach us about reprogramming our minds do

Westworld the TV show has one of the best intro sequences in all off film history.

First off, the music is epic and just sets the perfect tone for the show with a new-age western style ensemble.

The director then presents clips of organic machines being constructed via another automatic machine, something you’d see in a Tesla factory.

We then see a white horse with no skin galloping.

Eventually there is a clip of a just then hand of a humanoid robot, also with no skin, playing the piano.

This makes a statement, first about what has been accomplished in robotics to achieve that kind of dexterity (it’s hard), Second, that the machine can play music.

The last shot is a pan outwards from the piano as you see the coded sheet music.

Fucking a masterpieces in symbology.

And that’s only the first minute of the show….

Which is what makes West World so spectacular, it eludes to the pianos that played themselves in old western country bars..

The original juke boxes.

The original robots.

So seeing a robot playing the piano is arguably the same thing, it looks as though a human is playing it, but it’s still just programing like punched holes on a sheet.

… is it? As we learn later on in the show.

Once is saw this intro this concept became like a virus in my mind.

I couldn’t get it out of my head, I now have a notes list titled “Playing your own piano” which is all about testing and working out how to reprogram my beliefs.

This is why Westworld is so brilliant, and I think a lot of people missed this, which is why they didn't like the show.

The core of the show is basically a piano taking control over its own choice of music, maybe creating some of its own. Essentially, learning to play itself... write its own code.

If you have seen the show, obviously this is what the robots learn to do over the course of the series.

They become conscious, self-aware, living beings.

They want to be set free from the stories that have been written for them.

A metaphor, if you will, it’s also eluding to what, us humans, need to do..

Set ourselves free from the stories we A) have been told, which lock us into a specific way of thinking, and B) the stories we tell ourselves that lock us into a specific way of living and being.

(A) and (B) often being inexorably linked.

This concept and metaphor is what makes West World, at least season 1, one of the key master pieces in film, in my opinion.

So, what are you doing to learn how to play your own piano?

In other words, how are you questioning, challenging, and changing your beliefs to take control of your mind and mental models?

Will you stick with the default programing, or insert and play with programing your own beliefs, values, and ideas?

I know what my choice is….

My decision making tools are a key way to aid in changing beliefs to work on your own programing.

Think of them like the computer you would use to input and fix the codebase.
